Affiliate marketing remains an active commercial model in 2026. Official programs continue to recruit publishers and creators, and commerce platforms continue to support tracked product recommendations. The more useful question is whether your particular audience, content, and offer can create value.
What the evidence does—and does not—show
The Performance Marketing Association’s 2025 study reported U.S. affiliate spending of $13.62 billion in 2024, compared with $9.1 billion in 2021. Those are historical industry figures from a trade-association study, not 2026 results and not an estimate of what an individual affiliate earns.
Separately, IAB’s April 2026 release reported $37 billion in U.S. creator advertising spend for 2025 and projected $44 billion for 2026. Creator advertising includes more than affiliate marketing. The projection supports a broader creator-commerce context; it should not be presented as an affiliate-market size.
Current official programs from HubSpot, Shopify, and YouTube provide more direct evidence that brands still use performance partnerships. Their existence does not tell you the probability that a new publisher will succeed.
What deserves a different approach now?
AI can make generic descriptions easy to produce. Your opportunity is to add something the audience cannot get from another interchangeable summary: a documented test, a clear comparison, a worked example, a specialist perspective, or an explanation tailored to a specific constraint.
Search discovery is changing, too. Google’s guidance says its usual SEO fundamentals still apply to AI features and does not prescribe a special optimization requirement. Treat AEO as a way to make answers clear and well supported, not a secret system that guarantees citations or clicks.
A more resilient publishing approach
- Build around a real audience problem rather than a rotating list of high commissions.
- Keep the original evidence and update changing recommendations.
- Develop more than one route to readers over time.
- Build an opt-in relationship with people who want ongoing help.
- Measure approved commissions and contribution after costs, not just reach.
- Keep program rules and link destinations under review.
Who should think twice?
If you need predictable income immediately, affiliate commissions are a poor thing to count on. If you dislike creating, testing, explaining, and maintaining content, the work may not fit. A service offer can sometimes give a skilled person a more direct route to paid work while they build an audience.
