AEO usually means answer engine optimization: making content useful to systems that retrieve, summarize, or present answers. You may also hear GEO, or generative engine optimization. These labels overlap, and their use is not standardized across the industry.
Start with what is established
Google says the usual SEO fundamentals apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode. It does not require special AI markup or an extra machine-readable file. Eligible pages still need to be indexed and able to appear with a snippet; inclusion is not guaranteed. These statements concern Google’s products, not every answer system.
Write an answer someone can evaluate
Consider the question, “Do I need a paid scheduling tool for a two-person consultancy?” A useful page begins with a direct, conditional answer: a free option may be enough if your scheduling needs are simple; paid features become relevant when you need certain workflows. Then specify the conditions and explain the alternatives.
Place evidence close to the claim. If a feature depends on a particular plan, name that plan and record when you checked it. Distinguish your own test from a vendor statement. Explain where your recommendation stops applying.
Use a structure that helps readers first
- Question: state the exact decision.
- Short answer: give the recommendation with the important condition.
- Evidence: show the test, source, or comparison supporting it.
- Exceptions: explain who should choose differently.
- Next step: link to a useful demonstration or the relevant product details.
This is an editorial method, not a claim that systems will reward a particular format. Avoid invented FAQs, unsupported statistics, or keyword repetition designed solely to influence a machine.
Offer a reason to visit the source
A short answer may satisfy someone without a click. Original worksheets, detailed test conditions, worked examples, and maintained comparisons can give a person a reason to read further. Create those because they solve a real need, not because a particular file format promises AI visibility.
Measure without overclaiming
Record discoverable referral traffic, qualified visits, and downstream actions. You can periodically sample a fixed set of questions and note whether your brand or page appears, but those observations are not a stable market-share measure. Answers vary by system, context, location, and time.
Do not count every direct visit as AI traffic or treat a single citation as proof of repeatable acquisition. Build your business around customer usefulness and observable results.
