Build an affiliate tool people would use even without the links

Create a useful comparison assistant with ChatGPT Work or Codex, GitHub, Railway, and Supabase while keeping disclosures and evidence visible.

An affiliate article becomes more useful when it helps someone make a decision. A small interactive tool can take that further: collect a reader's needs, show the tradeoffs, and explain why a recommendation fits.

Start with a narrow comparison you understand well. For example, a hosting-needs worksheet can help a new builder decide whether they need a static site, a hosted application, or a store. It should not steer every answer toward the highest commission.

Build the decision logic before the interface

List the questions that change the recommendation: does the project need accounts, saved records, custom server behavior, product checkout, or only a public page? Identify which facts require current verification.

Write the reasoning in plain language. Include a “not enough information” outcome. A comparison that always selects one product is usually an advertisement wearing a calculator's clothes.

Give the agent a useful assignment

In ChatGPT Work or Codex, use your Astra Extra High workflow:

Build a beginner-friendly hosting-needs worksheet. Ask only questions that affect the recommendation. Show the reasoning, alternatives, sources, and last-reviewed date. Create an authorized GitHub repository, prepare Railway deployment, and use Supabase only if saved comparisons are needed. Preserve my approved referral URLs exactly and make the disclosure visible before the first affiliate link. Do not invent prices or promise earnings.

Start with manually reviewed rules. You may not need a runtime AI model for a reliable first version.

Keep commercial relationships visible

Use clear language explaining that you may earn a commission or referral benefit when a qualifying action occurs. Label the actual links. Keep recommendations and evidence separate from payout information.

For this workflow, Railway is a referral link and Shopify is an affiliate link. Check the program's terms before adding tracking parameters, shortening links, or making promotional claims. A successful click does not prove an eligible commission.

Deploy and verify the recommendation

Connect the selected repository branch to Railway. If users save comparisons, define private access in Supabase and test it with separate accounts. Keep server secrets out of source control.

Test realistic combinations: a personal blog, a store, a private dashboard, and an incomplete brief. Read the explanation for each. Does it follow from the answers? Does it acknowledge cost or maintenance that would affect the decision?

Check mobile layout, keyboard use, and outbound destinations. Measure useful completions and voluntary referral clicks without collecting unnecessary personal information.

Maintain the evidence

Assign an owner and review date to changeable claims such as plan features and promotions. If a claim cannot be verified, remove the certainty instead of keeping an attractive stale offer.

The tool should remain useful if every affiliate link were removed. That is a practical editorial test—and a better foundation for trust than chasing a conversion at the expense of the reader's decision.

How should I test an AI-built recommendation tool?

Run cases with different needs, a missing input, and no suitable product. Check each recommendation against its stated criteria and sources. Verify that sponsored links are disclosed and that the recommendation does not change solely because a different product pays more.

Hire help without outsourcing your editorial judgment

If building or testing the comparison tool exceeds your skills, a freelance developer can implement the interface or review accessibility and data handling. Give them the decision rules, evidence requirements, and disclosure placement in the brief. You retain responsibility for product claims and recommendations; payment should not depend on steering readers toward the highest commission.
